Meet the Team - World Pilot Day - Michael Carpenter - Dornier 328 Training Captain
Name: Michael Carpenter
Job Title: Dornier 328 Training Captain
Years at CMA: 3 years
What inspired you to become a pilot?
My story is pretty simple. I think I was hooked on airplanes from the time I was still being pushed around in a stroller. I remember my mother telling me that before I could even talk, I would point at every airplane in the sky. I grew up playing with airplane toys, airplane video games. At the age of 16, I was able to go on my first flight in a pipe cherokee, and I was hooked.
I'm proud to say I am the first one in my family to become a pilot.
Can you share a little bit about your journey in the aviation industry?
I have worked hard to become a training captain. The path to it had a few roadblocks. Opportunities starting out fresh from the Mount Royal Aviation program were scarce back in 2009. Through perseverance, dedication, and a bit of luck, I have gotten to where I am today.
What does a typical day look like for you as a pilot?
Begin every day with preparation. We go through an extensive preflight briefing of what we expect to encounter for the day. Make sure we are on the same page as the crew and set off for our first leg. Typically, we fly 4-5 legs in a day.
Every day is different, no matter how often we end up at the same destination.
What's been your most memorable moment on the job?
This one's an easy answer for me. The day I received my PPC on the Dornier. It's the first airliner I have ever flown.
What qualities do you think make a great pilot?
You could list a lot of traits here that make a great airline pilot. To name a few, good team worker, strong leadership, excellent communicator, patient and able to control your emotions.
What advice would you give to someone considering a career as a pilot?
Start young, experience plays a key role in this industry. Go for an initial flight with an instructor. You'll know quickly if you are truly passionate about it. Lastly, be prepared to work hard. If you have the drive, it’s easy to succeed.
